Data Type in the Object Explorer

As the name suggests, data types are groupings of sets of data with similar attributes.  Workbench is pre-configured with several data types.  We can create any number of new data types – see Creating a New Data Type below.

Add a Data Type Container

Adding a new data type.

To add a data type to an instance, right-click on the instance label and choose Add Type and then select a type from the dropdown list.

Rename a Data Type Container

Renaming a data type container

There are three ways to rename a data type:

  • Double-click on the data type label to produce an editable version
  • Click on the data type and press F2
  • Right-click on the data type label and choose Rename from the menu

To save the new name hit the Return button on your keyboard.  Note that although this changes the name of the data type within the current instance, it doesn’t cause a global change of the name.  When the same data type is created in another instance it will be given the default name.

Delete a Data Type Container

Delete a data type container

A data type container can be deleted in two ways:

  • Click on the container so it is highlighted and then press the Delete key
  • Right click on a container and choose Delete

Properties of a Data Type Container

You can view the properties of a data type in three ways:

  • Click on the data type so it is highlighted and then press Alt-Enter
  • Right-click on the data type and choose Properties
  • Use View -> Properties Window to display properties, float or dock the window so that the Object Explorer is visible and then click on the instance
