With a predicted 20 billion connected devices by 2020, IoT is going to be a big part of the future digital landscape. The sheer number, and the limited diagnostic capabilities, of these devices is going to present new problem diagnosis challenges. I recently tried to connect my car to my household WiFi. When it didn't work, I wanted to see the packets - but how?
In a new section of the TribeLab site, we aim to cover diagnostic techniques to specifically address problems with IoT devices. We start with a great paper by Jonathan Whiteside and Darrin Roach looking at vehicle connectivity. In the paper, the guys describe an experiment to trace the network connectivity of a Tesla Model S using everyday IT equipment. There were a couple of surprises, so it's well worth a read.
